So, where do you start? Let’s go through some details to help you decide on the style, size, and colour of your new desk.
First, it’s important to work out the space you have available. There’s no point getting attached to a desk that won’t fit in your office. These numbers will guide your purchasing process, including the height, width, and depth of your desk.
If you’re five to six and a half foot tall, your office desk height should be between 712-762mm. This way, you’ll sit comfortable using a regular chair. Most office desks are designed around 730mm, so this makes things easy.
If you want a stand-sit structure, it’s important to be able to adjust the range for standing work – which fluctuate between 900mm and 1200mm to prevent OH&S issues.
How wide your desk should be depends on what you’re going to use it for. Is it mostly computer work? Will you host guests there, too? What about that freelancer who’s working on a project with you – will you use your desk or the meeting room to collaborate? The desk surface should be at least 600mm wide, so you’ve got enough room to move and not feel restricted. However, you’ll probably need more space if you’ll be working on it for long periods of time.
If you’re an architect or graphic designer with photos and drawings all over your desk, you’ll probably want extra room. The last thing you should do is limit yourself. Choose a wider desk to ensure maximum flexibility to complete your daily tasks.
You probably haven’t thought too much about the depth of a desk. But, it should range between 508mm to 762mm. If you just plan to put a laptop and some essentials on your desk, aim for a depth between 712mm to 762mm. Storage is also important to consider. What can fit under the desk? Does the depth affect this?
